Brush-footed butterflies (family Nymphalidae) are one of the largest and most diverse groups of butterflies found in Florida. They are named for their reduced front pair of legs, which are covered in tiny hairs and resemble brushes rather than functioning walking legs. This gives them the appearance of having only four legs. Brush-footed butterflies display a wide variety of colors and patterns, ranging from the bright orange of monarchs to the striking eyespots of buckeyes. They are commonly seen in gardens, meadows, woodlands, and wetlands, where they feed on flower nectar and play an important role in pollination.
