Coastal plain willow is an important host plant for the viceroy and red spotted purple butterfly. The leaves are alternate, simple, lanceolate, variable in size to about 6" long, about 12 time as long as wide, margins finely toothed, lower surfaces whitish. Flowers: male flowers borne in attractive catkins near the end of branches, each catkin greenish yellow, arising with the new leaves. Fruit: capsule around 2" long
