Base wood tree is an important host plant for red spotted purple butterfly. The leaves are alternate, two ranked, simple, ovate, margins serrate, around 7" long, bases heart shaped and often unequal on either side of the central leaf axis. Flowers: borne in long stalked cluster subtended at the leaf axil by a long, linear, leaflike bract that has the appearance of a leaf and is quite distinctive. Fruit: dry, hard, reddish, round, and around 2" in diameter. Distribution: mixed moist woodlands
