Also known as Prickle Ash, Hercules' Club, Pepperwood or Southern Prickly Ash tree is one important host plant for the Giant Swallowtail Butterfly. The leaves are alternate, deciduous, pinnately compound, around 8" long, rachis with sharp prickles; leaflets commonly numbering seven to nine, but sometimes numbering to nearly 20, broadly lanceolate, typically in equilateral on either side of the central vein, dark green above, glabrous and margins crenate. Flowers: greenish yellow and borne in long cluster at the ends of branches. Distribution: hammocks, wet woods, sand dunes, shell middens, usually near the coast.
