Sassafras is one of the best host plant for the palamedes and spicebush swallowtail butterfly. Leaves are alternate, simple, around 4" long, typically characterized by having two or three terminal lobes which often give the leaves the appearance of mittens or three fingered gloves. Flowers: small, greenish yellow, about 1/2" across at maturity, appearing in spring learn the ends of naked branches. Fruit: a fleshy, ovoid, dark blue drupe, around 1 1/2" long. Distribution: Dry bluffs, secondary woods and disturbed sites.
