Also known as Winged sumac, Dwarf sumac or Flameleaf sumac.This shrub is another good host plant for the Luna Moth. The leaves are alternate, pinnately compound with a winged rachis, to about 12" long; leaflets 9 to 23 in number, lanceolate to elliptic, 3" long, margins typically entire but sometimes with a few teeth, lower surfaces pubescent, upper surfaces mostly glabrous except for a few scattered hairs along the main veins. Flowers are tiny, greenish yellow, borne in conspicuous clusters. Fruit: a flattened drupe, each 1/4" diameter, pubescent, dull reddish, borne in conspicuous cluster, mostly in the fall. Distribution: Uplands and disturbed sites.
