Also known as Black cherry, Rum cherry, or Mountain black cherry. Wild Black Cherry tree is an important host plant for red spotted purple butterfly. The leaves are alternate, simple, elliptic, shiny green above, around 6" long, generally drooping from the branch, margins serrate, each serration tipped with a tiny, reddish gland; petioles grooved and with one to several conspicuous glands when viewed with magnification. Flowers: small, white, borne in long racemes to about 3" long. Fruit: a shiny drupe, reddish at first, purplish black when mature and juicy. Distribution: mixed woods, uplands, fencerows, power lines, and other places where birds are likely to drop the seeds.
