Carolina Laurel Cherry is an important host plant for the red spotted purple butterfly. The leaves are alternate, simple, leathery, elliptic, around 4" long, upper surfaces dark green and lustrous, lower surface dull green, margins entire or with sharp teeth, some leaves on some plants more generously toothed than others; petioles of never leaves reddish. Flowers: white, fragrant, borne from the leaf axils in racemes to about 1 1/2" long. Fruit: a shiny black, oval drupe, around 3/4" long. Distribution: found in a variety of habitats due to extensive use as an ornamental and distribution by birds.
