This is an excellent host plant for the palamedes and spice bush swallowtail butterfly. The leaves are alternate, simple, entire, lanceolate, around 6" long, aromatic when crushed. Flowers are small, greenish, borne in loose clusters in the leaf axils. Fruit: a rounded, dark blue drupe, to about 1/2" diameter. Distribution: hammocks, bluffs and scrub.
