Sweetbay Magnolia also known as merely sweetbay, is the best host plant for the tiger swallowtail butterfly. The leaves are alternate, simple, entire, elliptic, around 6" long, green above, whitish beneath. Flowers: smaller than other magnolias but otherwise similar, petals white, around 1 1/2" long, usually not exceeding 4 " in width when fully open. Fruit: a greenish, ovoid, knobby, bonelike structure. Distribution: swamps and wetlands
