Also known as Common Spicebush, Northern Spicebush, Wild Allspice or Benjamin Bush.This small shrub is the best host plant for the Spicebush and Palamedes Swallowtail butterfly. Leaves are alternate, simple, entire, ovate to elliptic, around 4" long, upper surface dark green, lower surface grayish and pubescent at least along the central vein, but often pubescent thought, apices often tapering to a point, margins fringed with hairs, larger leaves borne near the tips of the branches. Flowers: yellow, clustered along the branches, often at the point at which the leafy branchlets, arise from the main branch. Fruit: an oblong, red, aromatic drupe, around 1/2" long. Distribution: bluffs, slopes, hammocks, and floodplains.
