White ash is an excellent host plant for the viceroy butterfly and tiger swallowtail butterfly. The leaves are opposite, pinnately compound, overall leaf 8" to 12" long; leaflets numbering five to nine per leaf, but usually seven, ovate, lower surfaces whitish, margins entire or bluntly serrate. Fruit: a winged samara, around 2" long. Distribution: generally inhabiting rich soils in conjunction with other deciduous hardwoods.
