Giant skippers (subfamily Megathyminae) are large, robust skippers found in parts of Florida, especially in dry, open habitats. True to their name, they are noticeably bigger than most other skippers, with thick bodies and powerful, fast flight. Their wings are typically dark brown with orange or yellow markings, and they are often seen darting rapidly between flowers or basking in sunny spots. Giant skipper caterpillars are unique in that they live inside yucca or agave leaves, boring into the plant as they develop. Adults feed little, if at all, and are most active during the warmest parts of the day.
