Pipevine Swallowtail " Battus Philenor" from Eden of Wings Nursery

The Pipevine swallowtail also know as the Blue Swallowtail is a fairly large black butterfly with a short tail on each hindwing. There is a row of small whitish spots on the upper hindwing. The underside o the hindwing has a row of large orange spots embedded in a metallic blue patch. Males have extensive blue iridescence on the upper hindwing. Unlike the male, females have very little blue on the upper side, and the white spots extend onto the forewing.
Larva: The caterpillar is velvety black with fleshy protuberance. Those on or near the back are short and reddish-orange. The tubercles near the legs are longer and blackish. The two very long front tubercles are used as feelers as the caterpillar moves about. The osmeterium is bright yellow. The gold rim caterpillar is similar.
Pupa: The chrysalis may be either green with yellow markings or brown.
