The Phaon Crescent butterfly is a small orange butterfly with black borders and lines on the upper sides of the wings. There is a yellow band across the middle of the forewing. The underside of the hindwing is whitish with dark brown markings. The fall and winter generations are mostly brownish on the hindwing below. The sexes are similar.

Larva: The caterpillars are light brown with darker brown stripes. There is a row of short, branched spines across each segment of the body.

Pupa: The pupa is brown with some darker markings.
