Palamedes Swallowtail and their Host Plants

The Palamedes Swallowtail  also known as Laurel Swallowtail is a very dark brown butterfly with yellow bands on the wings. There is usually a small spot toward the upper middle of the forewings. On the underside of the hindwing, a narrow yellow line parallels the body.

Larva: the young caterpillars are brown and white with a pair of eyespots on the thorax. They differ from Spicebush Swallowtail in having an all white rear end. Mature larvae are green above and reddish below with a yellow line between. There is a medium large pair of eyespots and small pair of orange spots on the enlarged thorax. The abdomen has rows a small blue spots. 

Pupa: The chrysalis is strongly bent away from the substrate and may be either green or brown.
