Painted Lady Butterfly and their Host Plants

Painted Lady Butterfly " Venessa Cardui" from Eden of Wings Nursery

Wingspan: 2" to 3"

Found all over the world, painted lady butterfly is a common garden visitor. It migrates north from the southwestern United State and Northern Mexico in spring and summer and in fall returns to warmer areas, where adults hibernate. Both the adult and caterpillar eat a wide variety of plants. See listing below. Though similar to the American lady butterfly, the painted lady has four eyespot on the outside hindwing, instead of two like the American Lady butterfly.

What plants are good for the caterpillar?

* Cirsium Horridulum "purple thistle"

* Cirsium Nuttallii "nuttall's thistle"

* Zebrina Mallows
