Gulf Fritillary Butterfly and their Host plants

Wingspan: 3" to 3.5 in.

Wings relatively long, tips drawn out and rounded. Brilliant fiery orange above with fritillary like black bars and dots (white pupil led basally) and veins. Female has heavy black chalice border on dew. Large, long, bright silver ovals dominate vhw and apical vfw. This butterfly makes its home mostly around the Gulf of Mexico, but it does wander as far north as parts of the Midwest in Summer. Cold temperatures send adults back south in fall, though. There are one or two generations each year. The caterpillar's harmless spines are dull yellow after a molt and turn black after Tye've dried, usually by the following day.

Larva: The caterpillar is orange with dark green stripes. each body segment has a transverse row of long black spines. The head has a similar pair of spines at the top.

Pupa: The pupa is light brown with pinkish white patches on the abdomen, It closely resembles a dead leaf.
