Facts about Quercus Nigra host plant:

This tree is an excellent host plant for so many Hairstreak butterflies. The leaves are alternate, simple, entire, extremely variable in shape, sometimes three lobed but more commonly spatulate, typically around 6" long. The flower male borne in narrow, hanging catkins, around 3 " long. Fruit: acorn over 1/2" long, borne in a shallow cup that encloses only the base of the nut.
