Called Hop tree also know as: Stinking Ash, Skunk Bush is an important host plant for giant swallowtail butterfly. The leaves are alternate, compound, with long petioles; leaflets typically three in number but sometime five, varying considerably in size and shape, exhibiting a musky odor when crushed; terminal leaflet elliptic to oval, margins entire to sometimes crenate or serrate; lateral leaflets ovate to lanceolate, typically in equilateral on either side of the central vein. Flowers: greenish white, borne in a widely branched panicle near the end of the branchlets. Fruit: a flattened, winged, samara; samara borne at the ends of branches in rounded cluster up to about 1" in diameter. Distribution: bluffs and rich woodlands.
