Facts about Prunus American host plant:
Also known as wild plum, or Marshall's large yellow sweet plum. American plum is an important host plant for the viceroy spotted purple butterfly. The leaves are alternate, simple, elliptic, around 4" long, margins serrate or doubly serrate, apices tapered to narrow points. Flowers: fragrant, with five white petals that turn pink with age, bell shaped at the base, appearing in early spring, borne in clusters of two to five. Fruit: rounded, red, juicy, around 3/4" in diameter, very tough, edible but sour. Distribution: woodland, mostly in soils with a limestone subsurface.
