Cottonwood tree also know as the Eastern Cottonwood or Necklace Poplar, is an important host plant for viceroy and red spotted purple butterfly. The leaves are alternate, simple, stiffish, deltoid ( pyramid shape), often copper colored when first unfolding, around 5" long, veins prominent, margins toothed, bases truncate, petioles long and flattened. Flowers: borne in catkins, 2 1/2" long. Fruit: a capsule about 4" long. Distribution: primarily in bottomland and wet woodland areas.
