Southern Magnolia is an excellent host plant for the tiger swallowtail butterfly. The leaves are alternate, simple, entire, stiff, elliptic to oval, generally around 7" long and sometimes longer, upper surface shiny, dark green, lower surfaces rust colored and covered with a dense mat of rusty brown, felt like pubescence. Flowers: petals of flowers large, white ti cream colored and very fragrant. Fruit: fruiting body bonelike and bearing bright red berries. Distribution: upland forest, woodlands, coastal hammocks and bluffs.
