Also know as also known as American storax, Hazel pine, Bilsted, Redgum, Satin-walnut, Star-leaved gum, Alligatorwood, Gumball tree. Description: Leaves are alternate, simple, over 7" long, star-shaped with five to sometimes seven straight, sharp pointed lobes, each with serrated margins, leaves colorful in the fall season. Flowers: Male flowers borne in a compact, erect stalk; female flowers borne in a rounded cluster and hanging pendently from a relatively long stalk. Fruit: hard, brown, spiny, and rounded, 2" diameter, hanging on a relatively long stalk. Distribution: Found in a variety of habitats from upland to lowland woods.
