Wonderful massive dark brown tree that produce edible nuts. This tree is one great host plant for the Luna Moth. The leaves are alternate, compound, over 18" long, often appearing even pinnate on mature trees due to lack of terminal leaflet, odd pinnate on younger specimens; leaflets usually 15 to 23 in number, Flowers: male flowers borne in greenish catkins, around 4" long. Fruit: rounded, larger than those of the hickories, usually 1" in diameter. Distribution: bluffs, ravine and upland woods.
