The leaves are alternate, simple, two ranked, predominately oval to elliptic, around 6" long, margins dentate, with 9-14 pairs of prominent lateral veins, each terminating at the tip of a marginal tooth. Flowers: Male and female flowers small and inconspicuous. Fruit: Borne in a spiny enclosure that splits at maturity to expose one to three nuts.
