This tall majestic tree that produce round, hard-shelled, edible nuts can be find in all East Coast until Texas. Mockernut Hickory also known as mockernut hickory, mockernut, white hickory, whiteheart hickory, hognut, bull nut tree is one important host plant for the banded hairstreak butterfly. The leaves are alternate, compound, odd pinnate, around 13" long; leaflets typically seven in number but sometimes five or nine, ovate to obovate; lowermost leaflets about one third smaller. Flowers: male flowers borne in light green catkins and around 8 " long. Fruit: a nut, borne in a thin, reddish brown husk. Distribution: found primarily I well drained upland woods.
